From consultation to installation to every step in between, our team is dedicated to making your design dreams come true. The following is a step by step guide of what to expect from Cape & Island Kitchens with a printable checklist to ensure we measure twice & cut once. 1. *Design Consultation* We will schedule a time to meet and discuss your project. At this meeting we will discuss: your project requirements, type of wood, preferred color and finish. We will review measurements and pictures of your space. We will also work with a design from your Interior Designer or Architect. Bring your ideas! 2. *Written Estimate* With the information collected at your consultation; we will produce an estimate for your project. This estimate will include: a scaled drawing of your project, a price for your project, delivery and installation cost, an estimated delivery date and information pertinent to your project completion. All estimates are valid for up to 30 days. 3. *Design Release* If applicable we will release a copy of your design upon receipt of a plan retainer of $1,000.00. The amount of your retainer will be deducted from your deposit amount. The retainer is non-refundable. 4. *Final Design* A site visit is required to finalize and confirm field measurements. The final design will be created based on existing conditions, appliance requirements and design and style considerations. We will require a signed approval on all final shop drawings and contracts. 5. *Placing your Order* A 50% deposit will be required to secure your order. You will receive an order confirmation and an estimated delivery date, dependent on chosen cabinet line lead-times. Any changes to design after this point will reflect in a price change and an additional deposit. 6. *Delivery and Installation* As your cabinetry delivery date to our warehouse approaches, we will arrange a delivery and installation date that is convenient for you. Installation will be done with the smallest possible amount of disruption to your household. The balance of your invoice will be required at delivery of your cabinetry per contract. No exceptions. A lot of times, our spatial dimensions can dictate the layout of our kitchen, as well as the plumbing & electrical components already in place. But with the desire for change in kitchen functionality that today’s demanding lifestyles encompass, a whole new kitchen design might just be what you need. Here are just a few of today’s most popular kitchen layouts: **L—kitchens** have two walls that come together at a corner, forming the letter L. This design creates a very efficient & functional work triangle and workflow that allows for more than one cook in the kitchen. Pair it with an island for additional counter space & storage, and you have a winning design! **U—kitchens** are just an L with one more side, making the U. The third side can be a wall with cabinets or a peninsula. U-shaped kitchens can work in small or large footprints and offer extra storage and counter space. This design also nicely accommodates two cooks, or a cook and a dishwasher. **G—kitchens** are just a U with one more little side that makes up the G. This additional side is often a peninsula used for seating, and like the U, it offers more counter space as well as additional storage. **One Wall—kitchens**, as the name implies, consist of a single wall that contains your main appliances. This design makes efficient use of a small space but also works beautifully in a large space. As with the L-shaped kitchen, pairing an island with the one-wall kitchen design can help you make the most of your kitchen. **Galley—kitchens** have two walls, or a wall and an island, that run parallel to each other. Galley kitchen designs make very efficient use of what are often tight spaces, where maximum storage and functionality are the primary goals. Though often only one cook can be in the “galley” at a time, this design makes excellent use of the “work triangle” and maximizes kitchen functionality. It can also be said that the kitchen island is the heart of the kitchen and is the most requested feature currently in Kitchen Design. Some islands can be too big, some too small but with the right design—can be just right. Photo by Murat Demircan on Unsplash #### **There are many choices when planning your kitchen remodel. Here are some great design ideas when considering your island design:** 1 - Add a Wood Counter Top to your island. Common species are Maple, Walnut and Cherry. You can also do Butcher Block. Wood Counter Tops are a very nice way to make a dramatic statement in your design. They are also warm and comfortable to rest your elbows on when having your morning coffee. This kitchen design takes advantage of the open concept spaces and has double ovens close in hand for ease of baking. Take your trays right from oven to island countertop. Photo by Christa Grover on Unsplash 3 - An island doesn't have to be big to be functional. This design features the perfect "work triangle" by placing the sink in the island. Placing the double bowl sink to one side leaves adequate counterspace on the other side for serving & quick cleanup while still providing island seating all in a neat, concise design. With the work triangle already perfectly laid out in this compact kitchen, this kitchen island gives you all the uninterrupted prep & serving space one could ask for. Bigger isn't always better and this design proves just that. 5 - The best of both worlds is represented here in this kitchen design. With a Raised Bar in addition to the island counter space your prep & dining areas are parallel and double your counterspace. Your guests can enjoy an appetizer & cocktail without impeding or competing with the host's workspace. Brilliant design. Photo by Sidekix Media on Unsplash #### **Additional design thoughts when designing your island:** - Counter Overhang: Minimum overhang for seating is recommended at 12″. A 12″ Overhang requires no additional counter support. - Comfortable Overhang is often between 15″ and 18″ and this requires additional support for the granite or stone counter like a leg or corbel. - Cabinet Clearance: Minimum clearance for around your island is 36″. This is very tight but acceptable. Better is 42″ clearance around the island with more around larger appliances like refrigerators and wall ovens, 48″ is best in these locations. - Change the color of the island to complement the kitchen. If you have painted cabinets – choose a stain on the island. Select an alternate granite for the island, one with lots of movement. - Soften edges of a granite counter by upgrading the edge detail on the island only to an ogee or bullnose, or add a curve in the counter. Posted September 13, 2022 by [Cape & Islands](https://capekitchens.com/about/cape-islands) When you remodel your kitchen, there are so many design choices to make. And definitely one of the most complex is picking out countertop materials. Do I pick granite, quartz, marble, or a wood top? Maybe even laminate? Which material is best for my needs? Do I prefer natural beauty, durability, more variety, or a combination of all? So many questions, so little time. The following are just a few guides to help you decide: Granite is a rock that comes from the depths of our good old Earth. Granite is very hard and durable but can be porous and does require regular sealing. Its natural formation makes it beautiful, but it also means that each slab is unique, with variations in veining and pattern. But that is also the beauty of nature. Quartz is a mineral that, when ground into a powder and mixed with resin, creates slabs, making it an engineered (man-made) material. These engineered stone surfaces do not need to be sealed, resist scratching, and offer a more consistent pattern throughout each slab. Marble is a rock that forms over a very long period of time from another rock called limestone. Marble is significantly softer than both granite and quartz and, like granite, requires regular sealing due to its natural composition. In addition, its naturally cool surface makes it an excellent countertop material for baking. Laminate countertops still deserve an honorable mention. They are created by layering paper or plastic sheets onto a hard backing. They do not need to be sealed but are prone to scratching from everyday kitchen utensils. They come in a wide variety of colors and patterns to suit virtually any design palette, which is definitely a plus when looking for variety. Another thought to keep in mind when choosing your countertop material: although granite and quartz are known for being heat-resistant, it is always advisable to use a trivet between a hot pot or baking sheet and the countertop, as there is no universal guarantee of how much heat these surfaces can safely withstand. **Last tip!** Once you decide on a countertop material—whether it be granite, quartz, or marble—be sure to personally select and tag your slab, as each one has its own unique veining and pattern. This simple step will help ensure you'll be happy with your choice for years to come.
